Chapter Six

Skyler waited patiently for Adrian to come back to the house. After she talked to her mother, she had thought it over and realized that she did need to talk to him. The only trouble now was that he wasn’t around.

Day after day, he was gone until the days turned into a week and then another. He didn’t call to let them know where he was, and with each passing day, Skyler began to fear that she had lost him for good.

Before she was ready to deal with it again, the full moon was coming, and that meant another cycle. Skyler had hoped that before this happened again, she would have her chance to talk with Adrian, but he continued to stay away. A few days before she was due to leave for the safe house, Skyler stood at her bedroom window looking up at the near-full moon when she heard his truck pull into the drive.

Skyler’s heart began to pound and her senses came alive with the simple knowledge that Adrian was home. She looked at the clock on her nightstand. It was a few minutes after midnight, and she was still dressed like she was going out for the night.

Biting her lip, she thought about what she should do. Sure, she needed to go and talk with him, but would he listen? Would he even let her in the same room? Skyler went over to the door, pressed her ear against it, and listened for him. She sensed Adrian when he moved quickly past her door.

Skyler waited a while before she left for his room. She thought he would probably take a shower before he did anything else. She gathered her courage while she waited until she thought enough time had passed. Opening the door, she took a deep breath. She figured this was her one and only chance, if she was to have her talk with him.

The house was quiet when she left her room. Everyone must have either been sleeping or in their rooms, or doing whatever they felt like doing. Skyler thought about her brothers. She noticed that since she had talked with her mother, they seemed to act differently around her, too. She saw the disappointment in their eyes.

Skyler didn’t knock when she reached his door. Instead, she turned the knob and walked inside. Right away, she smelled the lingering scent of the soap Adrian always used.

“Adrian,” Skyler called out to him when she entered the dark room. She felt like a scared little girl waiting for the boogieman to jump out and get her.

“Not a good time, Skyler.”

He sounded rough, and it scared her so that she jumped slightly. It took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust to the darkness and find him sitting on the floor with a towel around his waist, his legs drawn up and his arms and head resting on his knees.

“We...we need to talk,” she stuttered, taking a step closer to him. She heard him struggle to breathe and frowned.
